Chapter 21
Hartmutâs Travel
Berg was soon busy checking Saint Edburga over after they had pulled her up onto the shingle. They needed to ensure she was still sealed and waterproof for the journey out into sea. Frode was checking both the sails and oars. The ship needed to be ready for immediate action. They had been quiet the last few days and committed to their work. Both were very aware that they had come close to been killed.
Treabhair had set sail a few days ago with Hartmut and his contingent of warriors. Hopefully, they should have now landed and be heading north on foot to locate the old Roman outpost. Lady Eleen had made sure both Berg and Frode understood their oaths. She explained she expected them to be available, should she have need of them. The oath to her had to come before any other oath.
Frode had later spoken with Berg and laughed saying no mere women would dare call them to act on the oath over the oath to Ealdorman Oswi or the king.
Ealdorman Alestan had sent word back to Oswi. He was gathering troops. He had suggested to Oswi that he prepare his ship, then send it north to meet up with Treabhairâs ship which was already on patrol. They would both attack at the same time and pen the raiders ships in so they could not escape into the open sea. Alestan would lead troops to an assembly point near the lands of Oswald the Archbishop. Ealdorman Ludeca, Elfwine, Ordgar, Eadwig and his uncle Elfhere had all agreed to arrive with sections of their own troops. Oswald, the old warrior, had his warriors running around and was eager to be marching to war again despite his age. It would take days for them to assemble their troops and head north to meet each other. Meanwhile, the only troops in the field would be Hartmut and his nine warriors. With Treabhair and his crew nearby at sea.
Oswi soon had Aruth and Rolf organising the troops who would travel north with him. Aruth and half the guardsmen would stay at Holt to ensure its safety. Berg and Frode would be supplied warriors and a full crew, to then head out to sea a few days after Oswi had left trekking northwards to meet the other Ealdorman.
Hartmut and Treabhair had an easy trip northwards. They soon reached the large bay where Treabhair had escaped the clutches of the two ships of Jarl Healfden. Hartmut and his chosen nine warriors soon landed near the deserted homes of the sea-dwellers. Hartmut and three warriors were the first onto the beach. He stood watching the area while the men quickly checked the tumble-down buildings. Once they were certain all was clear Hartmut waved at Treabhair and the ship, signalling that he could disembark the remaining men and bring the equipment ashore
The three warriors with Hartmut clambered the nearby sand dunes and the dark peat land. They needed to double check nobody was around the area and it was enemy free.
